    Oscar Best Picture predictions

    With Oscar season approaching, film fans across the nation are getting ready to see which movies will make Best Picture during the 2016-2017 event. Even now, critics and movie buffs across the country are predicting which movies the audience will be seeing as nominees for this year’s award ceremony.  The following movies, are those who are predicted to most likely be in the nominations for this year’s Best Picture award:
    La La Land
    A Musical Comedy-Drama, starring Emma Stone as Mia, an aspiring actress, and Ryan Gosling as Sebastian, a jazz pianist, “La La Land” tells the story of two young people who are brought together by a mutual desire to do what they love.  However, as each slowly climbs the ladder to success, the increasing number of obstacles they must face starts to put a strain on their romance and their lives.  “La La Land” premiers on December 16th.
    Manchester By The Sea
    Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck), is shocked to find out that, in his passing, his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler) has made him guardian of his nephew, Patrick (Lucas Hedges).  Upon hearing the news, Lee leaves his janitorial job in Boston to begrudgingly move back to Manchester-by-the-Sea, a small fishing town where he was raised, and where Patrick lives.  In returning to his hometown, Lee must face his past that left him separated from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and his community.  “Manchester By The Sea” premiered on November 18th.
    Sully
    Based on a true story, Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger, played by Tom Hanks, attempts to make an emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River after the plane hits a flock of geese.  Sullenberger is able to land the plane safely with all 155 passengers intact and becomes a national hero.  However, he must face an investigation that threatens to tear apart his career. “Sully” premiered on September 9th.
    Moonlight
    A coming of age story of a young man, Juan, played by Mahershala Ali, who must live with a dysfunctional home life in Miami during the “War on Drugs”.  Documented in three chapters of his life, the story of moonlight depicts Juan as he finds himself and experiences the joys and pains of falling in love as he wrestles with his sexuality. “Moonlight” premiered October 21st.
    Arrival
    Amy Adams stars as the Linguistics professor Louise Banks, who must lead a group of investigators when 12 large spaceships land in various places around the world.  As countries around the world balance on the knife edge of global war, it is up to the investigators and Banks to discover a way to communicate with the extraterrestrials who have landed on Earth.  However, as Banks rushes to find a solution, she takes a chance that endangers her life as well as the lives of all mankind. “Arrival” premiered November 11th.
    Loving
    Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga) are an interracial couple married in 1958.  While their small town in Virginia was more integrated than surrounded parts of Southern America, the state of Virginia jailed and banished them as they started to create their home and family.  Relocating with their children to Washington D.D., the family is able to, in the end, make their way back to Virginia.“Loving” premiered November 4th.
    Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
    Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn) is a 19 year old private and is part of the Bravo squad.  After fighting an agonizing battle in Iraq he becomes a hero and comes home to go on a victory tour.  However, America’s perceptions of the war were not truly the realities as seen through the many flashbacks depicting what the soldiers really went through. “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” premiered November 11th.
    Fences
    “Fences” tells the story of a former professional baseball player, Troy, played by Denzel Washington, and the problems that he ends up creating in his family.  Denying his son Gabriel, played by Mykelti Williamson, his dream to play college level football, Troy brings home a baby that he had after cheating on his wife Rose, played by Viola Davis. Troy must try to reconcile his mistakes and continue to raise his family as he seals with race relations in 1950’s America.“Fences” will premiere December 17th.
