Many students attended the annual Homecoming Talent show on Sep. 28 and were rewarded with a host of talents. Some of the great acts included the “Violin Twins” Emily and Sarah Fischer, Robert Chaney on the keyboard, Angelica Fernandez singing, and The Dance Company.

Sarah and Emily Fischer are juniors at Augustana and members of the Delta Chi Theta sorority. They have been playing violin since they were three.

The Fischers arranged the song they performed at the talent show themselves..  The Fischers said that they have always wanted to be in the talent show and were glad to get “exposure for our little business called Violin Twins”.  As The Violin Twins, the Fischers play at country clubs, weddings, restaurants, and other venues.

Robert Chaney, a senior at Augustana, taught himself to play the keyboard and has had “over half a decade of self-taught experience”..  Chaney said that he has performed in local bars since he was thirteen.

“There is something unusually nerve-racking about playing for your Fraternity Brothers [Rho Nu Delta] with Homecoming points on the line,” says Chaney.

Most of Chaney’s performance was improvised.

Angelica Fernandez, a sophomore at Augustana who sang at the Talent Show, said “I’ve always loved to perform”.

“(I have) performed in talent shows and singing competitions before.  I competed last year at Augie Top Voice and at talent shows in high school,” said Fernandez. “I also participated in a performing arts group for showcases in high school”.

Fernandez definitely had performance experience, but apparently almost missed going to auditions because she was sick. However, her friend encouraged her to go.  Fernandez is incredibly glad that she was able to participate.

“Everyone was so incredibly talented and it was a pleasure to perform with them,” says Fernandez.

Augustana’s Dance Company also performed in the Talent Show.  First-year Elli Zamzow said that it was exciting to be a part of something so big this early into her Augustana career.

“I have been dancing my entire life, and after seeing Dance Company perform during a visit last year, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” says first-year student student Elli Zamzow.

This was Zamzow’s first talent show, but Dance Company performs often throughout the year. They have two other performances throughout the year.  Zamzow said being part of the talent show was a great experience.

“Being in the talent show was amazing!” said Zamzow. “Everyone was really fun to be around and they were all super supportive of all the other acts.”
